And here are some answers:

How do I join the CSA for 2014?

You can join the CSA anytime, as long as their is room.

To join the CSA, please follow these directions. The process is awkward due to the software, contact us if you need help!

Renewal Members (who already have an account AND who made orders last year):
Option 1: Send a check directly to us (no order required), and we will credit your account.
Option 2: Make your first order for 2014 and pay the membership fee then (it’s automatically added).

New Members (who haven’t ordered before):
Create an account on this website.
Option 1: Send a check directly to us (no order required), and we will credit your account.
Option 2: Make your first order, which is your “trial order.” Make a second order, which is your official “I’m a real member! order.” The membership fee will be automatically added to that second order, and you can pay it then.

Are there membership fees?

In the past, as a traditional CSA, we asked for large share payments upfront to help get the season started (in other words, pay for the seeds!). With our new Buyer’s Choice CSA, we are taking a risk and are asking you to pay only the very, very basic share cost of $40. This indicates that you are serious about supporting us for the season. The membership fee is good for the calendar year.

The bulk of our planning for the season happens early in the year. We purchase seeds in late January. It is very difficult to change our seeding and planting plans after March. Please join early, so that we can grow for you!

The only other cost is that of what you order, when you decide to order. You are welcome to try the program for one order before officially becoming a member shareholder. The membership fee will be automatically added to your second order. Thank you for your commitment!
*If you want to join now, but won’t be ordering until fresh crops begin in the spring, you can join by sending a check directly to us which we will credit to your account. You will still need to set up an account on this website.*

Will I have to buy vegetables I don't want?

Unlike some CSAs where everyone gets the same box of stuff (and you don’t know what you’re getting until you get it), at Roots & Wings Family Farm you reserve what you want, in the quantities that you want, when you want using this online reservation system. We custom pick the items you reserved, and have them ready for you at distribution.

A weekly email is sent to our members listing the vegetables, herbs, eggs, and other goods available that week. We also offer certified organic fruits and sweet corn from partner farms, and other non-organic-but local fruits and specialty items as they are available.

You can browse the items on this website before you place your reservation. However, to receive our emails and to make a reservation, you must have an account on the website (which can be deleted if you decide not to join).

How do I order?

You do not have to make a reservation every week. Each week, an email is sent to all of our members. It includes some farm news, links to recipes, and highlights the produce available. The reservation system is operative from Friday morning to 9am the following Monday. It is first-reserved, first-served. You can pick up your items on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on your distribution site. Visit “The Market” section to start filling your cart! If you are having any trouble submitting your reservation, please contact us. (but please don’t wait till midnight on Sunday—we go to bed early!)

WINTER 2014: Ordering is on a bi-weekly basis. Please call for the next order dates. Order deadlines have been extended to noon on Monday. Jamestown orders are delivered to work or home instead of picked up at a distribution site; the farm distribution remains the same.

When do I pay?

We accept cash, checks, or SNAP benefits when you pick up your order. You may also pay online with a credit card when you submit your order. However, your card will not be charged until we mark your order complete at distribution. This will allow us to make adjustments if you decide to purchase something from the extras table, or if something was unexpectedly unavailable. If you do use a credit card, a 3.5% processing fee will be added to your bill.

Why Support Locally Grown?

We believe that small, diverse, family-owned farms contribute to society’s overall health.

Supporting a way of life
Please help us preserve an honest and worthy means of making a living. Farming is an honorable profession. So many kids want to be farmers when they grow up…let’s help them NOT change their mind when they’re ready to make a career choice. No farmers, no farms, no food!

Stabilize and improve our local economy
By purchasing produce and other items from local growers you are providing stability to the Chautauqua Region economy.

Save natural resources
If you live in the Village of Cherry Creek, your tap water comes from underneath our farm fields.
We avoid disposable plastics as much as possible—or reuse them as much as we can. By bringing your own boxes and bags to cart your produce home, and by reusing the farm containers, you will add less waste to our county landfill.
Compost! We will gratefully feed our soils with your kitchen scraps and leaves. Please contact us for more info.
